Battle Fig: What the Fig Just Happened?

Battle Fig: What the Fig Just Happened?

Then Wow. I’d been going through withdrawal the last few months. You regular readers might remember those Iron Chef Battles? We hit the ground running, and our first event, Battle Basil, was super successful. The group decided to host monthly battles, and so the competitions, er, friendly powwows that involve cooking (potluck style) around a secret theme ingredient, continued. Next up was Battle Coconut, and after that, Battle Strawberry. Things were looking good for those monthly gatherings. And for me especially – I was pumped and ready for battle 4 since my strawberry pizza and strawberry-balsamic tart won first and second place at Battle 3. But then Summer happened. And since over half of us are genetic counselors in our ‘real’ lives, summertime for many of us has translated to spending hours indoors in the confines of a smelly office or overcrowded coffee shop cramming words and concepts like...

Viva Barcelona

The other day I was trying to wedge a freshly made container of fig & sour cream ice cream onto one of the shelves of my too-small-for-my-liking-and-definitely-too-narrow freezer section of my side-by-side fridge. In my opinion, these sorts of fridges are stupid. Who wants a fridge that can’t even hold a box of take-out pizza? And the freezer – don’t get me started. It’s not like I’m some crazy person who freezes everything I can get my hands on ….. I mean, geezz… can’t a girl put ice cream in the freezer without having to clear off an entire shelf, meanwhile rearranging all the other shelves to do said clearing!? To top it all off – as if it couldn’t get worse than not having room for ice cream – it’s really shameful when my ice cream runs low (which happens often with a human Dyson named Chris in...

Love in a Bottle

Love in a Bottle

Chris & I suddenly found ourselves without plans this past weekend and, after a somewhat relaxing weekend prior to this one (other than standing in the cold pouring rain at the opening night of Lollapalooza) it seemed like a good idea to hit the road and head over to the other side of the lake. I’d already planned to take the day off on Friday, so Chris took it off too and off to Michigan we went. I mean, it is blueberry and peach season after all, and the folks from the lower peninsula AKA “the mitten” sure know how to farm. Turns out, they also know how to harvest some grapes. Our little venture was perfect. We got lucky and scored a cute little B&B in Harbour Country for one night. We used the majority of Friday and all of Saturday to taste wine (and of course buy...

What’s the Dilly, Yo?

What’s the Dilly, Yo?

One thing I remember about the fridge in my parents’ old house, aside from having to constantly refill the ice trays: there was always KoolAid and Sweet Tea. Which is why we had to constantly refill the ice trays. Also, I blame my incredible sugar urges on those two things. I can’t tell you how many times my lips, teeth, and tongue were stained blue and red from the KoolAid. Just like I can’t tell you how many cups upon cups of sugar went into that tea pitcher. I just know it was a hellah-lot. Shoot, sometimes we’d just take a ziploc bag of sugar and mix in the KoolAid flavor powder and stick our fingers in the bag and lick every. last. drop. out. Remember lick-a-maid? Sorta like that, without that fancy sugar stick. But fingers worked well too. Another fridge memory: in the door, there were always...

Farrolicious

I think I got a little spoiled with being on break from school. We had good, homecooked dinners most weeknights and some days on the weekend. I had time to catch up (rather stay up to date as I had too much time to get behind) on my Food Network shows and not get too behind on my magazine reads. We had free weekends, although I welcome the busy weekends because they’re spent with family and friends. But now school is back in session and already five weeks in. Matter of fact, school is almost over. Hard to believe, but I’m 5 weeks away from a culinary ‘degree’. I think, after having graduated from 3 colleges, that I’ll call it quits with the schooling. Oh, and the loanage. With only one weeknight of cooking, and the fact that it’s officially well into summer (finally), I’ve been more inclined to...
