Battle Roots & Tubers: Fancy Stuff

Guys! And girls! Everyone in between, too! I was scrolling down my list of pending blog posts and I realized that I absolutely. totally. forgot. to write the post about our 2nd San Francisco Iron Chef competition. Dang. Maybe I was sad that I didn’t win or something. But I better get used to that – people are FANCY here. I guess it isn’t all about winning though, is it? Yes, there are some moments of fun, some moments when you just enjoy eating good food and getting to know the other people who are extra-excited about Iron Chef. There is that, too. There are also the moments of whipping up tasty goodness in your kitchen, and even getting to see your husband cook for a bit, too. Those are both nice things. The things that aren’t nice are the multiple stores you have to go to in order...

Real Life

I’m going to tell you a little about how things go down around these parts when the weekend rolls in. Don’t get too excited – it isn’t nearly as fascinating as I’m suggesting it is. But that doesn’t stop me from talking about it, so here goes. We generally kick things off as soon as we get home on Friday. Chris has the luxury of getting to sneak out early which means we get home around the same time as one another. Whoever gets home first picks out a bottle of wine, opens it up, and gets to relaxing. Sometimes that also means I’m cooking something that signals it’s weekend time, which typically involves pasta. I’m not sure why, but pasta dishes always seem appropriate on Fridays. Last Friday was no different. While eating said dinner and wine-ing, we proceed to catch up on a couple of tv shows...

The New Staple

The New Staple

There comes a time in all of our lives that we eventually have to grow up and start fending for ourselves. Specifically, we have to feed ourselves; the days of coming home to mom and dad’s fresh-baked meatloaf, fried chicken, and steak n’ potatoes fade into the past, quickly becoming memories as opposed to everyday life. For many of us, we have college as a “buffer” from the inevitable days of reality. We have the dining halls serving up lukewarm pizza, cereal in bins with pitchers of warm milk at the adjacent counter, and last but certainly not least – yesterday’s leftover fruit, usually a lot of honeydew melon and grapes. And let’s not forget the $.10 ‘oodles of noodles’ (chicken flavor! Oriental flavor!) that saved me from ordering Gumby’s pizza on many the occasion. Eventually, the dining halls also fade into the background as we are forced to...

Scrooge-like

Scrooge-like

It’s safe to say that I typically do not post recipes here in time for the holiday at hand. Thanksgiving is full of good food around here, and I never seem to make any pre-turkey day trial dishes; I’m a big fan of winging it with new things, and it’s safe to say that most things Thanksgiving are tried and true repeats from our families, and our friends’ families. As for Halloween, I suppose you could say that I’m whatever the equivalent to Scrooge is for this season – and it’s not that I wouldn’t fancy a grown up costume party or a creative Halloween jack-o-lantern if I really thought far enough in advance. But I don’t, and so the weeks slowly roll by and by the time I can say “expelliarmus“, the holiday has come and I am costume-less, decoration-less, and for those rug rats trampling up to...

Rinse and Repeat

Rinse and Repeat

Aside from having the occasional relentless sushi craving, at which time I could easily devour four maki rolls by my lonesome, seafood has not been a mainstay in my repertoire as of late. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve cooked plenty of seafood dishes, cephalopods included, but it’s been quite a while. Does the oyster-shuckin’ day even count?! And if not, then it’s been almost a year since seafood has had a presence here – yikaroonies! Needless to say, that has got to be remedied. Because here’s the deal – here’s my beef with seafood: you have to plan for it. Yeah, I know, that’s not normally a problem for me at all; I plan what days of the week my hair gets washed, for cryin’ out loud. But when I cook fish, I want it to be fresh as all get out. I want it to smell like...

Juicing It

Juicing It

Last week is a week I hope not to repeat any time soon. Not because I had a lot of work to do, and not because traffic was rough most mornings, and certainly not because I was sick or anything of the sort. Last week sucked because Chris and I did a 3-day juice detox. Exactly. Sure, vacation was great and all, but somewhere along the way we became pretty disgusted with ourselves and all of the greasy, processed, yummy food we were eating. Our pants were a lot tighter (remember? I said bring your fat pants on a Deep South trip) and our tummies much gassier than usual, which, for me, is saying a lot. Too much detail? Never! Anyhoo, let’s just call it the straw that broke the camel’s back, and leave it at that. A 3-day diet of nothing but juice seemed like the perfect punishment...

One for the Road

One for the Road

If you ever wanted to go on the weirdest vacation ever, get yourself to Chicago, rent a car, and drive down to New Orleans. Stop at strange wineries where the wine pourers forget to zip their pants, visit cities that are semi-cool but littered with great beverages, food, and occasional sites (like an arch where you can get into a pod and shoot up to the top – holla!), and without a doubt, grab some Rainbow Twizzlers to keep you going. Make sure you have your “fat pants” with you though, because by the middle of the week, you’ll need them. But first, see a great friend’s nuptials. Hang out with your old work buddies. And sit at the table of white folk that won the dance-off. Yeah, we did that. Felicia aka homeslice – congrats! The next day, our visit to Chicago unfortunately very short, we had a...
